right-supervisor-at-fast-universityright-supervisor-at-fast-university

While taking a class of 1st Semester I have noticed a common challenge among our students particularly those at the BS, MS, and PhD levels. Most of students struggle to identify their research domain and find the right supervisor for their academic thesis.

I have deeply observed what problem students are faced:

  1. There are many research domains like NLP, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, etc. and student are not familiar at the early stage.
  2. Spending too much time searching for supervisors through trial-and-error methods, which affects their academic progress.

To address these issues, I developed a simple data-driven solution with the help of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help our students in finding the right supervisor.

The Problem: Challenges Students Face

Students have repeatedly shared their concerns:

  • “How do I know which supervisor is best for me if I don’t even know which domain I belong to?”
  • “It’s time-consuming to figure out which faculty works in domains like NLP or Data Science.”

This leads to delays in supervision pairings, mismatches in projects, and even missed opportunities for collaboration.

I realized that solving this problem could significantly improve our students’ academic experience.

The Solution: Faculty Research Dashboard

To bridge this gap, I came up with the idea of creating a faculty research dashboard powered by NLP algorithms. Here’s how I built it:

  1. Scraping Public Faculty Profiles

I gathered publicly available data from our university website, including faculty names, summaries of their research expertise, and their profiles.

  1. Using NLP to Understand Research Areas

I applied NLP techniques to process faculty summaries:

  • Tokenizing summaries and removing irrelevant pieces like stopwords.
  • Extracting key technical terms from each summary.
  • Grouping similar terms into clusters using clustering algorithms.
  1. Mapping Faculty to Research Domains

Using clustering results, I assigned each faculty member to one of the following research domains:

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Machine Learning (ML)
  • Computer Vision & Image Processing
  • Data Science & Analytics
  • Cybersecurity
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Others…
  1. Building an Interactive Dashboard

Finally, the results were visualized in an intuitive, UMAP-based dashboard, where:

  • Faculty members are grouped by research domains.
  • Students can click faculty names to view summaries and profiles.
  • It becomes easy to visualize how faculty expertise is distributed across domains.

How the Dashboard Benefits Students

This dashboard solves several problems:

  • Students can easily filter faculty members by their research domain. For example, a student interested in NLP can immediately see and filter all faculty working in this field.
  • By providing research summaries and profile links, students can save time and energy otherwise spent sending generic inquiries.
  • It’s especially helpful for first-semester students or those transitioning between domains, allowing them to explore multiple fields and understand faculty expertise at a glance.

Finding the right supervisor is a challenging but crucial step in a student’s academic journey. Through this faculty research dashboard, I aim to simplify this process and empower our students to make smarter, faster decisions about their academic and research paths.

Want to see it in action? Check out the interactive faculty dashboard and find your ideal supervisor today!
